Microphlebectomy for Large Varicose Veins

Microphlebectomy is a technique that uses tiny entry points to remove large varicose veins. The openings are so small that they only require a piece of tape to close them, allowing the area to quickly heal and leave no visible marks behind. Removal of varicose veins, even large ones, does not affect blood circulation in the leg because other veins take over the task. The final result is a quick procedure that removes an unattractive and painful vein accompanied by a very quick recovery time and an excellent aesthetic result.

What is the Treatment Like?

Microphlebectomy is performed on an outpatient basis in the comfort of our office. Relief from the pain and unwanted varicose vein is immediate; there may be some minor side effects that will clear up in just days. There is no set downtime, although patients may be advised to wear compression stockings for a set amount of time, and it may be wise to avoid engaging in strenuous activity until any side effects clear up.

What About Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is highly effective for small varicose veins and spider veins, but it does not work very well for large varicose veins. For large varicose veins, microphlebectomy is the current standard of care.

Will the Varicose Vein Come Back?

Since the actual vein has been permanently removed, it is impossible for it to recur. However, it is possible for other varicose veins to form. Modifiable risk factors for varicose veins include being overweight and sedentary, standing or sitting without a break for long periods of time, and frequently wearing high heels. In order to reduce the risk of developing another varicose vein after your procedure, we may advise you to walk daily, wear compression stockings, and elevate your legs as often as possible. However, since most cases of varicose veins seem to be related to genetics, age, and past reproductive history, it is still possible that a new varicose vein can form.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

There are one-way valves in the veins that only allow the blood to move towards the heart. When sending blood back out of the legs to the heart, fighting against gravity, these valves and the pumping action of the calf muscle during movement are essential to return the blood to the heart. If these valves fail, the blood tends to pool in the veins, causing them to swell up and form blue, red, or purple visible veins. If a varicose vein becomes extremely enlarged, it can cause pain, fatigue, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, and even ulcers through the skin over the vein. It is often medically necessary to treat large varicose veins.
