A Closer Look at Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a time-tested treatment for varicose veins and spider veins. The technique and technology have evolved over the decades and today it is considered one of the safest and most effective treatments for unwelcome and cosmetically hinderant veins in the skin. Here at O’Donnell Vein and Laser in Annapolis and Easton, we are thrilled to offer this option to our patients and encourage you to learn more about it.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that involves the injection of a chemical solution directly into the affected vein. This chemical irritates the vein lining and causes the blood to clot and the vein to collapse. The blood finds its way through healthy veins back to the heart and the damaged vein is gradually absorbed by the surrounding tissue and eliminated by the natural processes of the body.

Talk to a Vein Expert

When you have a consultation with our specialist, your veins will be examined. We may need to test the extent of the venous insufficiency as well as the beginning and end of the affected vein. If you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy, we may ask some questions about your medical history and any medications including dietary supplements you are taking.

After the Procedure

The injections will be given in our office and only take a matter of minutes. You can drive yourself home afterward and will be encouraged to walk for a few minutes over the following days. You should not do vigorous aerobic exercises for a number of days after your session.

You may be asked to wear compression stockings for a few weeks to make sure the treated veins remain closed. Sclerotherapy will remove varicose veins and spider veins permanently, but new ones can develop if your lifestyle doesn’t change. If you sit or stand for long hours every day, your veins need to overwork to keep the blood moving back to your heart. Overworked veins gradually become weak and stop moving the blood efficiently. This blood pooling is what causes varicose veins.

Venous insufficiency may not begin as a serious health issue, but if it is not treated in the beginning, it can develop into a bigger issue over time. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that can remove weak and swollen veins before they develop into serious problems such as skin ulcers that never heal, dark and thick skin around the ankles and dangerous blood clots.
